Pregnancy and childbirth mark an important turningpoint at which the roles and relationships of couples andtheir families are redefined on different levels. Whileparenthood can bring joy, it also confronts couple relationshipswith new challenges [10, 11]. As pregnancymay generate changes in physical, emotional, social andeconomic needs, it can be a stressful time. This period isassociated with increased demands on individual capacities, the intimate partner relationship and householdeconomic resources, and a reduction in leisure time andopportunities to socialise, which can exert adverse effectson emotional wellbeing [10]. Individual and dyadiccoping strategies tend to decrease under stress, leadingto an increased risk of physical and psychological aggression[12–14]. The vulnerable period for IPV associatedwith pregnancy extends further than the time betweenconception and birth - from a year before conceptionuntil one year after childbirth [4, 12–15].
