Seine künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt Den Hartog an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Rotterdam von 1971 bis 1976. Erst entstanden jedoch überwiegend Keramikskulpturen, bis er Anfang der 80er Jahre seine Leidenschaft für das Material Bronze entdeckte.
Der Themenkreis seiner Werke entstammt einerseits der Tierwelt, die in ihrer facettenreichen Motivik der antiken Mythologie verhaftet ist. Andererseits stellt seine Tochter Eline für den Künstler und Vater ein immer neu inspirierendes Modell dar.
