Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert ist das Grödnertal in den Dolomiten berühmt für seine Holzschnitzkunst. Hier in der großartigen Bergkulisse des „Val Gherdeina“ spricht die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung ladinisch, eine Sprache, die sich vor rund 2.000 Jahren zur Zeit der römischen Besatzung entwickelt hat. Die Holzschnitzerei ist so eng mit dem Grödner Tal und seinen ladinischen Bewohnern verbunden, dass trotz Weltcuprennen, romantischen Pferdeschlittenfahrten und einer gewaltigen winterlichen Silhouette Gröden immer in erster Linie das Tal der Herrgottsschnitzer geblieben ist.
