Kiểm định này nhằm giúp kiểm tra mối liên hệ giữa biến phụ thuộc và biến độc lập. Ví dụ, phương pháp này kiểm tra có sự khác biệt giữa nam và nữ đối với sự hài long khi mua sắm tại Tesco hay không. Điều đặc biệt là phương pháp này chỉ có thể thực hiện nếu một biến có 2 lựa chọn ví dụ như giới tính. Đối với các biến nhiều hơn 2 lựa chọn thì bắt buộc phải thực hiện các kiểm định khác như One way ANOVA hoặc kiểm định Chi-Square mới có thể rút ra kết luận về mối liên hệ giữa các biến.
