Schmidt erfühlt jeden Zweig, jedes Blatt, jeden Halm. Seine handangespitzten Bleistifte - selbst schon fast Kunstwerke - sind dabei die organische Verbindung zwischen Hand und Zeichnung, mit denen er hunderte von Stunden an einem Motiv arbeitet. "Mein Anliegen ist es, in meinen Bildern die Verbindung zwischen Mensch und Natur, das so genannte 'Einssein' ins Bewusstsein zurückzurufen, eine Verbindung, die wir als Kinder oft erfuhren." Von Schmidts Zeichnungen geht damit eine Art ewige Frische aus, vertraut und neu zugleich. Er will den Menschen mit seinen Werken die Natur als Lebensgrundlage zurückgeben.
