Tomato ‘ASVEG #6’, tomato “L4422” (Lycopersicon
pimpinellifolium Mill), ‘Pintong Long Eggplant’ (EG117)
and eggplant “EG203” were sown on 2 July 2001 in the
greenhouse of the Asian Vegetable Research and Development
Center (AVRDC). Both ASVEG #6 and EG117 are
popular varieties grown in Taiwan. ASVEG #6 has been
identified as being flood sensitive during the rainy season.
L4422 is a wild type of tomato that has been shown to be
more flood tolerant than ASVEG #6 (AVRDC annual report,
2002). EG203 is flood tolerant and is used as rootstock
for tomatoes in Taiwan. EG117 is more flood-tolerant than
EG203 (AVRDC annual report, 2002). The seedlings were
transplanted into 5-inch clay pots containing a medium
consisting of peat moss, loamy soil, and sand in a ratio of
2:1:1 (v/v/v) on 2 August 2001. Plants were evenly spaced
every 30 cm to encourage similar growth rate and size. Average
day/night temperature was 33 ◦C/29 ◦C and average
day length was 14 h during the period of study. The plants
were watered twice a day. The correct amount of compound
fertilizer solution (N–P2O5–K2O, 20–20–20) was applied
once a week.
