ประเทศไทยมีประวัติศาสตร์ยาวนานมาก โดยมีความสืบเนื่องและคาบเกี่ยวระหว่างอาณาจักรโบราณหลายแห่ง เช่น อาณาจักรทวารวดี ศรีวิชัย ละโว้ เขมร ฯลฯ โดยเริ่มมีความชัดเจนในอาณาจักรสุโขทัยตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 1981 อาณาจักรล้านนาทางภาคเหนือ กระทั่งเสื่อมอำนาจลงในช่วงต้นพุทธศตวรรษที่ 19 แล้วความรุ่งเรืองได้ปรากฏขึ้นในอาณาจักรทางใต้ ณ กรุงศรีอยุธยา โดยยังมีอาณาเขตที่ไม่แน่ชัด ครั้นเมื่อเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นครั้งที่สองในปี พ.ศ. 2310 พระเจ้าตากสินจึงได้ย้ายราชธานีมาอยู่ที่กรุงธนบุรี
