The gradual increase of difficulty previously mentioned can easily be planned: in the first stage. The pupils write down exactly what is on the board. In this work no opportunities for mistakes are given, except those due to carelessness or too rapid observation; though children with poor eyesight will always make mistakes. In the second stage, the children copy down parts of sentences, and then have to complete them themselves. In the third, they have to write down the question on the board, and then answer them, or they may write down short passages of narrative which later they will fill out and make more exact by the addition of Adj., Adv. and phrases expressing time, place and manner.
