The total global forest area reported by country in year 2015was 4000 million ha, a decrease of 3% from 4128 million hareported in 1990. This decrease was due to a decline of 200 millionha in the tropical domain, partly offset by an increase of65 million ha in the temperate domain, with smaller changes inboreal and sub-tropical domains. The tropical domain reportedthe highest percentage of forest area in 2015 (44% of the total), followedby the Temperate domain (26%). In terms of regions, Europe(including the Russian Federation), has the highest reported forestarea at 25% of the total, followed by South America (21%) and NorthAmerica (16%).
