There is a statue of Bodhisattva in the main hall of the Horyu Temple, one of the oldest temples in Japan. This statue was a gift of the king of Silla to honour Prince Shotoku’s memory upon his death. When Buddhism came to Silla, it delivered Buddha’s image of Maitreya Bodhisattva. These image of Buddha were popular all over the nation, and in addition to this, faith on the images gave moving power to the Huarang warrior caste of noble youths of Silla and they became prominent warriors who were strongly devoted to the Silla kingdom.
