เมื่ออายุได้ ๑๘ ปี ได้บรรพชาเป็นสามเณรโดยมีญาท่านพรหมา เจ้าอาวาสบ้านระเว เป็นพระอุปัชฌาย์ หลังจากบรรพชาเป็นสามเณร ในขณะนั้นหลวงพ่อพระครูวิโรจน์รัตโนบล(ญาท่านดีโลด) เจ้าคณะจังหวัดอุบลราชธานีในอดีต ได้เป็นประธานในการสร้างอุโบสถบ้านโพธิ์ศรี และบุรณะอุโบสถเก่าแถบตำบลโพธิ์ศรีและตำบลระเว เมื่อมีพระเถระผู้ใหญ่มาในท้องที่พระสังฆาธิการในละแวกใกล้เคียงจึงได้ทำการต้อนรับ รวมทั้งญาท่านพรหมา และพระในปกครอง หลวงปู่เก่งในขณะนั้นเป็นสามเณรและทำหน้าที่อุปฐากพระอุปัชฌาย์ได้เห็นอาจริยาวัตรของพระเถระผู้ใหญ่ รวมทั้งพระครูวิโรจน์รัตโนบล ซึ่งท่านได้เห็นสามเณรเก่งก็เกิดความเมตตาเป็นอย่างยิ่ง และได้ทราบว่าเป็นคนที่มีต้นตระกูลมาจากบ้านกระโสบ- หมากมี่ อำเภอเมืองด้วยแล้ว จึงเอ็นดูเป็นพิเศษ
เมื่ออายุครบ ๒๐ ปี จึงได้เข้าอุปสมบทที่วัดบ้านหัวดอน โดยมีญาท่านรัตน์ เจ้าอาวาสวัดบ้านหัวดอน เป็นพระอุปัชฌาย์ ได้ฉายาว่า “ธนวโร” แปลว่า ผู้มีทรัพย์อันประเสริฐ เมื่ออุปสมบทแล้วได้มาจำพรรษาที่วัดกิตติราชเจริญศรี บ้านนาแก
