1. ความเป็นมา

สหประชาชาติ (ESCAP) ได้ส ารวจและพิจารณาให้เป็นเส้นทางเชื่อมระหว่างทวีปเอเชียและยุโรป จากเมือง
อิสตันบูล ในประเทศตุรกี ผ่านอิหร่าน ปากีสถาน อินเดีย บังกลาเทศ พม่า ไทย มาเลเซีย และสิ้นสุดที่ประเทศ

แนวเส้นทางใหม่เป็นเส้นทางด้านเหนือผ่านรัสเซีย เลียบชายฝั่งทะเลด้านตะวันออกของจีน ผ่านพม่าหรือลาวหรือ
เวียดนาม กัมพูชา ไทย มาเลเซีย สิงคโปร์ และข้ามเรือไปถึงอินโดนีเซีย โดย ESCAP ได้ศึกษารายละเอียดของ

โดยรวมทางเชื่อมต่อจากเวียงจันทน์-ท่าแขก-Vung Anh และทางเชื่อมต่อจากกรุงเทพฯ–
น้ าตก-ด่านเจดีย์สามองค์-ธันบูซายัต-ย่างกุ้ง เนื่องจากเส้นทางที่ 1 เป็นเส้นทางที่มีเส้นทางช่วงขาดสั้นที่สุด
และผ่านเมืองหลวงมากที่สุด รวมทั้งมีผลตอบแทนสูงสุดเมื่อเทียบกับเส้นทางอื่นๆ ทั้งนี้ โครงข่ายเส้นทาง
ดังกล่าวมีเส้นทางช่วงขาดและทางเชื่อมต่อระยะทางประมาณ 1,271 กิโลเมตร อยู่ในประเทศไทย กัมพูชา
