Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum, syn. Lycopersicon esculentum L.2n = 2x = 24) is one of the most important vegetable crop fromSolanaceae (McCormick et al., 1986) consumed all over the world(Mueller et al., 2005). Tomato fruits are consumed frequentlybecause of low calorie (35%), rich iron content, vitamin C, vitaminA and as a source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant. Dietary intakeof tomato containing lycopene has been associated with a decreasedrisk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases (Giovannucci et al., 2002;Sesso et al., 2003). In India, tomato growth, productivity and nutritionalquality is often challenged by frequent exposure to abioticand biotic stresses such as low temperature, salt, drought, flooding, heat, oxidative stress and heavy metal toxicity (Ruma et al., 2009).Developing abiotic stress tolerant tomato employing plant geneticengineering, will facilitate its production in adverse climatic conditions.Globally, scientists have made efforts to incorporate variousabiotic stress-tolerant genes in tomato (Hsieh et al., 2002; Jiaet al., 2002; Park et al., 2004; Roy et al., 2006; Rai et al., 2012).
