A characteristic of a number of species of the
Dipterocarpaceae family is their commercial importance
as timber trees, which has resulted in
extensive utilisation. Owing to repeated leggings
and subsequent shifting cultivation, huge areas
are now depleted and in need of rehabilitation.
According to the International Tropical Timber
Organization (ITTO, 1990) statistics, there are
at least 70 million ha of seriously depleted forest
in southeast Asia. Deforestation in the Asia/Pacific
region continues; the annual deforestation
rate in the area is estimated at about 1.8 million
ha (ITTO, 1990). If rehabilitation is not undertaken
in the near future many of these forests will
become useless bush- or grassland
