Like most other digital circuits in a computer, memory systems use a clock thatcontrols exactly when a read or write operation begins. As Figure 10.3 shows, however,a memory system is linked to a device such as a processor. What happens if theprocessor’s clock differs from the clock used for memory? The system still works becausethe controller holds a request from the processor or a response from the memoryuntil the other side is ready.
