Die vitale, wirbelnde und doch streng organisierte Natur in seinen Gemälden spiegelt die aufgewühlte Stimmung Vincent van Goghs (1853-1890) in diesen Jahren. Glücklich über sein Atelier in Arles malt der Niederländer unter anderem eine Reihe von Baumgärten. Das gleichmäßige Licht könnte auf den Postimpressionisten Paul Signac hinweisen, der ihn kurz zuvor besuchte.
