Nissan has given its new X-Trail a sportier look than the model it is replacing. The automaker also has added a front-wheel-drive variant and a seven-seat version of the model, which was previously sold only with four-wheel-drive and a five-seat configuration.
The X-Trail is now the only Nissan crossover available with the option of seven seats after the automaker decided not to replace the seven-seat Qashqai+2. Nissan expects the changes to boost sales of the new-generation X-Trail to 80,000 units in Europe and Russia in 2015, up from a previous-best result of 38,000 sales in 2012.
Nissan forecasts that the X-Trail will attract 500,000 customers worldwide in 2015, up from a little less than 100,000 last year, helped by China and U.S. sales. In the United States, Nissan sells the X-Trail as the Rogue.
The previous-generation Rogue was based on the Qashqai. Rising demand for crossovers prompted Nissan to design the third generation of the X-Trail with sleeker and sportier lines, said Timothee Fondeur, the X-Trail’s project manager for Europe.
