จากการเรียนการสอนที่ผ่านมาส่วนมาก พบว่า ครูภาษาอังกฤษมักจะให้นักเรียนท่องคำศัพท์พร้อมกับความหมาย แต่เมื่อพบคำศัพท์ดังกล่าวในข้อความที่ได้ยินหรืออ่านก็ไม่สามารถบอกความหมายของข้อความหรือประโยคที่ได้ยินหรืออ่านได้ถูกต้องเนื่องจากคำศัพท์นั้นอาจมีความหมายแตกต่างกันเมื่ออยู่ในสถานการณ์หรือบริบทอื่นๆ ลาหนุ่ย (Lanui, 2538)
