Dari cerita asal usul Pencak silat tersebut, dalam perkembangannya terjadi perubahan fungsi yang berlangsung secara perlahan dimulai pelajaran ilmu silat, yaitu keraton. Di keraton, ilmu pencak silat beladiri hanya diperuntukkan bagi anggota keluarga raja dalam rangka mempersiapkan mereka menjalankan tugasnya sebagai pembela kerajaan. Perkembangan selanjutnya, pencak silat diperkaya oleh wawasan baru yang mengaitkan kemahiran teknik beladiri dengan perkembangan manusia dalam suatu kosmologi yang utuh. Pendidikan pencak silat tidak lagi bersifat kejuruan, bukan pula sebagai keterampilan saja, melainkan bertujuan untuk pembentukan kualitas kepribadian manusia.
