ปตท. ดำเนินธุรกิจพลังงานในต่างประเทศเพื่อแสวงหาแหล่งพลังงานใหม่ๆ และแหล่งพลังงานทดแทน เพื่อสร้างความมั่นคงในการจัดหาพลังงานให้กับประเทศ และเป็นการต่อยอดธุรกิจที่มีอยู่ในปัจจุบันโดยอาศัยความรู้ ความเชี่ยวชาญ และประสบการณ์ของบุคลากรในการขยายการลงทุนในต่างประเทศ โดย ปตท. ลงทุนผ่านบริษัท ปตท. อินเตอร์เนชั่นแนล จำกัด (PTTI) และบริษัท พีทีที กรีน เอนเนอร์ยี่ จำกัด (PTTGE) โดยถือหุ้นร้อยละ 100 ในทั้งสองบริษัท ปัจจุบันPTTI ได้ลงทุนในธุรกิจท่อก๊าซธรรมชาติในประเทศอียิปต์ ธุรกิจถ่านหินในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย และธุรกิจโรงไฟฟ้าพลังน้ำในประเทศลาว และ PTTGE ดำเนินธุรกิจปลูกปาล์มในประเทศอินโดนีเซีย
