ศิลปะอยุธยาเริ่มตั้งแต่สมัยสมเด็จพระรามาธิบดีที่ ๑ (พระเจ้าอู่ทอง) ทรงสร้างพระนครศรีอยุธยาขึ้นเป็นราชธานีตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. ๑๘๙๓ ลงมาจนเสียกรุงฯ ครั้งที่ ๒ เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๓๑๐ อยุธยากินพื้นที่ รวมไปถึงเพชรบุรี ราชบุรีและกรุงเทพฯด้วย

สำหรับพระพุทธรูปในสมัยนี้มีลักษณะดังนี้ คือ
ในยุคแรก ดังที่กล่าวมาแล้วว่าพระพุทธรูปแบบอู่ทองรุ่นที่ ๒ และรุ่นที่ ๓ ถือได้ว่าเป็นพระแบบอยุธยาตอนต้นด้วยเนื่องจาก ก่อนสถาปนากรุงศรีอยุธยา ราว ๒๖ ปี มีการสร้างพระพุทธรูปขนาดใหญ่แล้วแบบที่เรียกว่าพระพุทธรูปแบบอู่ทอง ซึ่งได้แพร่หลายอยู่ในแถบกรุงศรีอยุธยาก่อนที่พระเจ้าอู่ทองจะทรงตั้งกรุงศรีอยุธยาขึ้นเป็นราชธานีแล้ว ดังอาจเห็นได้จากพระพุทธรูปองค์ใหญ่ ณ วัดพนัญเชิง ซึ่งเป็นแบบอู่ทองรุ่นที่ ๒(รูปที่ ๑) พระพุทธรูปแบบอู่ทองนี้คงแพร่หลายต่อลงมาจนถึงแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระบรมไตรโลกนาถ (พ.ศ. ๑๙๙๑-๒๐๓๑) เห็นได้จากพระพุทธรูปที่ขุดพบในกรุพระปรางค์วัดราชบูรณะ ซึ่งสร้างครั้งสมัยสมเด็จพระบรมราชาธิราชที่ ๒ (เจ้าสามพระยา พ.ศ. ๑๙๗๖-๑๙๙๑) พระราชบิดาของสมเด็จพระบรมไตรโลกนาถ ส่วนใหญ่เป็นพระพุทธรูปอู่ทองแบบที่ ๓ (รูปที่ ๒) ทั้งสิ้น ลักษณะจะสังเกตเห็นได้ว่าพระพุทธรูปสมัยอยุธยาตอนต้นนี้มีอิทธิพลสุโขทัยอย่างเห็นได้ชัด เช่น พระพักต์รูปไข่ พระวรกายเพรียวบาง ฐานเตี้ย ลักษณะคล้ายบัวคว่ำบัวหงายแต่ไม่มีรายละเอียดของกลีบบัว

ในช่วงปลาย นิยมพระพุทธรูปแบบทรงเครื่องใหญ่ (รูปที่ ๔) ลักษณะเช่นนี้เป็นลักษณะแบบอยุธยาอย่างแท้จริง และมีปรากฏมาแล้วตั้งแต่พุทธศตวรรษที่ ๒๓โดยนิยมสร้างควบคู่ไปกับพระพุทธรูปธรรมดาไม่ทรงเครื่องดังที่เคยนิยมมาแต่อดีต(รูปที่ ๕)
