In the previous chapter, the adhesion between the polyolefin matrix and the woody filler was found to improve its mechanical properties. Such improvement is achieved through the formation of grafting between the woody filler and MPP by esterification. MPP was evaluated as a compatibilizer and also as a dispersing agent for the woody filler PP composites.So far, MPP was prepared in advance and added to the filler (chiefly RGP) and PP while kneading. Therefore it may be called a two step process. However, if the process is completed in one step or continuously, it may be termed a shortened or rationalized process. In the one step process, the addition of MAH into PP and the kneading of RGP with the resulting MPP are conducted simultaneously. In the continuous process, the former and the latter are conducted separately but successively made at a constant heating rate of 2ºC/min, under a constant compressive load of 10kgf/cm2. The temperature range was from 140ºC to the flow temperature.
