Việc thực hiện chủ trương trên đây của Đảng đã đạt được nhiều thành tựu, góp phần quan trọng vào sự nghiệp phát triển kinh tế - xã hội, gia tăng sức mạnh tổng hợp quốc gia, giữ vững độc lập, chủ quyền, thống nhất và toàn vẹn lãnh thổ của đất nước, giữ vững an ninh chính trị và trật tự, an toàn xã hội; cải thiện đời sống nhân dân, củng cố niềm tin của các tầng lớp nhân dân vào công cuộc đổi mới; nâng cao vị thế của Việt Nam trên trường quốc tế. Nước ta đã thiết lập quan hệ ngoại giao với hầu hết các nước, có quan hệ kinh tế - thương mại với hơn 160 nước và 70 vùng lãnh thổ, là thành viên của hầu hết các tổ chức khu vực và quốc tế quan trọng với vị thế và vai trò ngày càng được khẳng định. Quan hệ giữa nước ta với các nước trên thế giới ngày càng đi vào chiều sâu; hợp tác về chính trị, quốc phòng, an ninh, văn hóa, xã hội và các lĩnh vực khác được mở rộng.
