LIFE CYCLES: EXPANDING AND CLOSING THE
MATERIALS LOOP
In a general sense, the traditional view of product utilization is the one-way
process of extraction ® production ® consumption ® disposal shown in the upper
portion of Figure 17.6. Materials that are extracted and refined are incorporated into
the production of useful items, usually by processes that produce large quant-ities of
waste by-products. After the products are worn out, they are discarded. This
essentially one-way path results in a relatively large exploitation of resources, such as
metal ores, and a constant accumulation of wastes. As shown at the bottom of Figure
17.6, however, the one-way path outlined above can become a cycle in which
manufactured goods are used, then recycled at the end of their life spans. As
