เกาะภูเก็ตและเกาะบริวารมีแนวปะการังก่อตัวรวมกันเป็นพื้นที่ประมาณ 16.63 ตารางกิโลเมตร สภาพปะการังในพื้นที่ที่เปิดออกสู่ทะเลลึกส่วนใหญ่อยู่ในสภาพสมบูรณ์ปานกลาง โดยเฉพาะที่เกาะราชาซึ่งอาจถือว่าไม่ได้รับผลกระทบทางด้านมลพิษจากชายฝั่งเลยยังมีสภาพสมบูรณ์ดี ส่วนพื้นที่ที่อยู่ทางซีกตะวันออกของเกาะภูเก็ตเป็นสภาพธรรมชาติที่เอื้ออำนวยให้มีการพัฒนาของป่าชายเลนและแหล่งหญ้าทะเลกระจายอยู่หลายแห่งเป็นเหตุให้พัฒนาการของแนวปะการังเป็นไปได้ในระดับหนึ่ง อย่างไรก็ตามในช่วงสองทศวรรษที่ผ่านมาจังหวัดภูเก็ตมีการขยายตัวทางกิจกรรมบนชายฝั่งและในทะเลเป็นอย่างมาก เป็นเหตุให้แนวปะการังซีกตะวันออกของเกาะภูเก็ตได้รับผลกระทบจากตะกอนที่เกิดจากการพัฒนาชายฝั่ง ตะกอนน้ำเสียที่ถูกพัดพามาตามลำคลองไหลลงสู่ทะเล รวมทั้งตะกอนที่ฟุ้งกระจายบนพื้นทะเลน้ำตื้นบริเวณป่าชายเลนที่พบอยู่ทั่วไป แนวปะการังในพื้นที่ส่วนนี้จึงอยู่ในสภาพเสื่อมโทรมมาก

The condition of coral reefs in the Phuket area. The island of Phuket and Koh Steiner coral reef formation is an area around 16.63 square kilometers.
