เพื่อทำหน้าที่หลักในการขับเคลื่อนการดำเนินงานรัฐบาลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ที่สำคัญ สนับสนุนให้เกิดบริการออนไลน์ภาครัฐ เพิ่มโอกาสและความเท่าเทียมของประชาชนในการใช้บริการภาครัฐโดยมีเป้าหมายในการช่วยเติมเต็มและเพิ่มความมั่นคงปลอดภัยจากบริการอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ของรัฐ ทั้งนี้ สำนักงานรัฐบาลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (องค์การมหาชน) จะรับผิดชอบด้านการบริหารจัดการเกี่ยวกับระบบโครงสร้างสารสนเทศด้านรัฐบาลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (e-Government) สำหรับประเทศไทย การศึกษาวิจัยและพัฒนาสถาปัตยกรรม และมาตรฐานสำหรับรัฐบาลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ รวมถึงให้คำปรึกษา แก่หน่วยงานภาครัฐในการประยุกต์ใช้เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศและการสื่อสารที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการพัฒนาด้านรัฐบาลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (e-Government) ให้เป็นมาตรฐานเดียวกัน และที่สำคัญไม่น้อยกว่าไปกว่าประเด็นอื่นๆ คือการส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนการเพิ่มศักยภาพของบุคลากร ให้มีทักษะความเชี่ยวชาญด้านระบบรัฐบาลอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (e-Government) รวมถึงการเผยแพร่ข้อมูลข่าวสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง
