Raffael suchte eine Einheit zwischen Bild und Architektur zu schaffen. Wenige Figuren, Tiefenraumillusion und neue Farbkontraste wurden für künftige Malergenerationen zur verbindlichen Vorlage. Zentral ist vor allem das um 1514 entstandene monumentale Altarbild der „Sixtinische Madonna“. Neben den Madonnen und religiösen Bildern entstanden auch Portraits, die durch ihren repräsentativen Erscheinungscharakter zum offiziellen Bildnistypus wurden.
