Bulk gold (Au) and other non-Pt metalshave attracted little attention in electrocatalysistoward ORR due to their poor catalyticperformance that is confirmed by bothexperimental evidence and density functionaltheory (DFT) calculations.3,10 Fortunately,recent studies have demonstratedthat the Au particles with the sizes of lessthan 2 nm, which are also known as clustersdifferentiating from nanoparticles (NPs)due to their small sizes and narrow sizedistribution,11 have much higher electrocatalyticactivity for ORR than the bulk Au andlarger Au NPs.12,13 The enhanced catalyticactivity of Au clusters is accounted for by thehigh fraction of low-coordinated surfaceatoms and that oxygen molecules can beadsorbed on the cluster surface and activatedmore easily than the close-packed counterparts.1217 The utilization of the clusters as theelectrocatalysts will not only dramatically improvethe efficiency of ORR but also considerablydecrease the materials cost
