1. Cycling
Brief introduction
What do I do in spare time? Well there’s lots of different things I could tell you about – I’m a pretty active person and I like to keep myself busy so even when I’m not working I’m always doing something.
What it is
I suppose my favourite activity is simply riding my bicycle. I moved to Cambridge about a year now and it’s a city famous for being bike friendly – perhaps because it’s so flat. So I decided to buy myself a bike. At first it was just to go to work but I enjoyed it so much that I also started cycling for fun.
When and where I do it, and Who I do it with
At first I would just ride around the city by myself – going through some of the parks and down by the riverside. Then I discovered that there was a really active Cycling Club. It’s really just a group of people who like to get out and about on the weekend. So I joined up and started going out with them most Saturdays. We don’t tend to go very far – normally only around 20-25 miles and we don’t race. The idea is just to enjoy the day and we normally end up in one of the local villages and share a meal or picnic before heading back into the city.
Why I enjoy it
I enjoy cycling because it’s of course good exercise and I like to keep fit. But it’s a bit more than that. It allows me to get out of the city and see some of the countryside.
You can add more benefits, such as:
- a perfect way of getting exercise
- eco – friendly, responding to the call of living a low carbon and emission lifestyle
- appreciating to the view better
- helping reduce traffic congestion

2. Hanging out with friends
Brief introduction and What - When
With the job, study and other responsibilities for over the number of extra activities, I have a busy schedule in my daily life, but I still maintain some of the activities I really enjoy. One such activities is hanging out with my friends during my day offs.
Where
We often meet at some places like restaurant, café’ or cinema in the evening or weekends and enjoy our time.
Who
I mostly do it with my close friends and you know everyone often has 4 or 5 such friends like this. I enjoy the topic we discuss or even the chit-chat we have in our conversation. We talk about our study, our work and other stuff that happened through the week. We share our feeling together. Sometimes we give a piece of advise for someone who is getting into some troubles or even just listening to others. You know, in some cases, we just need someone who can stay by our side, listen to us and give us a hug. It’s much more than any words.
Why
As all of us are busy over time, we can’t meet each other very often and our meetings on our day-offs help us maintain our friendship. This activity allows me to spend quality time to get their updates, discuss on topics that I can learn many things from. This is indeed a good activity, at least to me, as I value their friendship and enjoy their company. Good friends are like treasures in life as I have often found their helps in times of distress and need. As the old saying: “A friend in need as a friend indeed”. I can’t imagine my life without them.
3. Playing Computer game
Brief introduction
Well, I’m going to tell you about one thing I like to do more than anything else in my free time. It is playing computer games, and, actually, I’ve been playing computer games since I bought my first computer and my first CD, and I don’t tend to give it up because I like it very much.
What
I am just crazy about shooter video games and my favourite one is Call of Duty. This game is all about World War II and the thing I like the most about this game is that everything is seen not only from the viewpoint of one country, for example, American soldiers, but also from the point of the others, for example, British or Xoviet soldiers.
When
Then, erm of course, like any adult I have some responsibilities I have job, so my free time is limited and I usually play computer games after my work hours or after workday or at the weekends, and, of course, not everybody is happy, especially my girlfriend, because she wants me to spend as much time as possible with her rather than erm with the computer.
Why
Another thing I like about this hobby is that you don’t have ….to have a lot of money or this hobby doesn’t require you to have a very expensive equipment, because you just need to have a computer, a keyboard, and a mouse, and, of course, some your favourite CDs or DVDs with computer games, and after that you can enjoy your free time.
Then, erm, of course, and a certainly there are some reasons why I like playing computer games, and the first one is that it is really good way to relax and I also think that computer games help me to release or to get rid of bad and negative emotions, and help me explore or experience something new while I am playing.

4. Crocheting
Brief introduction – What
Time is up, right? OK …Eh, you know, you know, it’s quite a task to choose what to speak about really … I mean I’d been hesitating between flicking through magazines and crocheting .. and finally decided to speak about the latter, which is my oldest hobby. It was my mom who taught to crochet about 25 years ago, so I was a preschooler then, … and I think I’ve progressed in this area quite a lot since that time.
How often – When - Where
As for how often I do it, I should .. I should be honest and say that “not very often” and there was a time in my life when I .. I gave it up completely. I was in my early 20s then, and, you know, university, boyfriends …well … not really a stay-at-home period … And then my kid turned six and I thought we should do some arts and crafts with her and I took crocheting up again. The last time I spent an hour crocheting was about a week or so ago. I created … I made a tiny little baby bird for my daughter.
Luckily, I don’t really need any bulky or expensive equipment, so .. if I .. I think .. I think if I had to incur substantial expenses, I would never enjoy this sort of eh pastime activity ..eh .. I usually need a couple of crochet hooks, and some wool or cotton, and it’s also a good idea to have a place to sit which should be eh well-lit or else you’ll ruin your eyesight.
Why
The main reason why I find this pastime enjoyable is because it functions as a letout for my creativity which is not realized through … other leisure pursuits of mine. Another ..another thing is that I have a very high boredom threshold, that is I am very patient and I derive pleasure from doing something easy and repetitive for relaxation when I know that in the end I will create something useful for someone I care about. What I’ve been meaning to say is that crocheting toys is an opportunity to spend some quality time with my child who is learning this skill from me with genuine interest and that is incredibly rewarding. And that’s more or less it, I guess …
