The teaching profession, over the last 20 years, has been plagued by a number of problems. Studies have indicated that these problems are responsible for thousands of teachers leaving the profession each year (Ingersoll, 2001; Galton and MacBeath, 2008). Increasing work load and lack of rewards (Ingersoll, 2001) along with “the intense and continuous involvement of self”, as postulated by Evans, may also lead to “teacher burnout” (Evans, 2001). Consequently, the propensity to quit teaching is real and is attributed largely to the general dissatisfaction arising from their conditions of employment (Gift, 1972; Ingersoll, 2001). According to Evans (2001), the teacher experiences four stages and during each, a different level of professional maturity is achieved. She argues that the teacher needs a nurturing environment to realize professional growth (Evans, 2001). This career model is somewhat similar to Huberman’s, seven stages which take teachers from their career entry through to the stage of disengagement (McCormick and Barnett, 2006). He believes that the teacher’s conduct changes at different stages through his/her career, until the final career stage, during which the teacher begins to withdraw from teaching activities. Many teachers will not experience all of the stages in both career models as fewer teachers are today “envisioning long term commitment to classroom teaching” (Hammerness, 2006).
The discontent among teachers is not restricted to developing countries. It exists in
developed states and is manifest in the high attrition and turnover rates experienced in
educational institutions globally Organisation for Economic Co-operation andDevelopment
(OECD, 2004). In the USA, approximately 11 per cent of the teaching population quit
the profession each year (Ingersoll, 2001). According to Ingersoll (2001), job dissatisfaction
is the reason stated by teachers who go in the pursuit of new careers. The greatest
loss however is among graduate teachers who are most qualified, and their departure
is understood to be greater in academic disciplines such as the sciences (OECD, 2004).
