ลักษณะภูมิประเทศ

ลักษณะภูมิประเทศของจังหวัดกาญจนบุรีปะกอบด้วยทิวเขา หุบเขาและที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำ โดนพื้นที่ด้านเหนือและตะวันตกของจังหวัดเป็นเทือกเขา แล้วค่อย ๆ ลาดลงด้านทิศใต้และทิศตะวันออก แบ่งออกเป็น 3 เขตใหญ่ ๆ ได้แก่

1. เขตภูเขาและที่ราบสูง
พื้นที่ด้านเหนือของจังหวัด ในอำเภอศรีสวัสดิ์และทองผาภูมิ มีลักษณะเป็นเทือกเขาต่อเนื่องมาจากเทือกเขาถนนธงชัยถัดไปจาด้านตะวันตกของจังหวัดเป็นเทือกเขาตะนาวศรี ซึ่งกั้นพรมแดนระหว่างประเทศพม่าทอดยาวลงไปทางใต้อยู่ในพื้นที่ของอำเภอสังขละบุรี ทองผาภูมิ ไทรโยค เมืองกาญจนบุรีและด่านมะขามเตี้ย บริเวณนี้เป็นแหล่งกำเนิดต้นน้ำธารของจังหวัด มีภูเขาที่มีความสูงตั้งแต่ 1,000 เมตรขึ้นไป ในตอนเหนือของจังหวัดโดยเฉพาะในบริเวณเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าทุ่งใหญ่นเรศวร เช่น เขาใหญ่ เขาเคลกู เป็นต้น
ส่วนบริเวณที่มีระดับความสูง 400 – 1,000 เมตร เป็นภูเขาในลุ่มน้ำแควใหญ่และแควน้อยในเขตอำเภอสังขละบุรี อำเภอทองผาภูมิ อำเภอศรีสวัสดิ์และอำเภอเมืองกาญจนบุรี และส่วนที่มีความสูง 100 – 400 เมตร อยู่ในเขตภูเขาบริเวณอำเภอไทรโยค อำเภอบ่อพลอยและอำเภอศรีสวัสดิ์

2. เขตที่ราบลูกฟูก
พื้นที่ด้านตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของจังหวัด มีลักษณะเป็นที่ราบเชิงเขาสลับกับเนินเขาเตี้ย ๆ อยู่ที่บริเวณอำเภอบ่อพลอย อำเภอเลาขวัญและบางส่วนของอำเภอพนมทวน

3. เขตที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำแม่กลอง
พื้นที่ทางใต้ของจังหวัดมีลักษณะเป็นที่ราบทำให้ดินมีสภาพความอุดมสมบูรณ์ อยู่ในบริเวณบางส่วนของอำเภอเมืองกาญจนบุรี อำเภอพนมทวน อำเภอท่าม่วงและอำเภอท่ามะกา จึงทำให้เป็นพื้นที่เกษตรกรรมในการปลุกอ้อยและนาข้าวตลอดปี
