Based on the aforementioned considerations regarding agerelatedchanges, we suggest a basic gesture set (Table 1)that can be used to engage older adults in full-bodyinteraction. It was created in cooperation with a physicaltherapy expert to ensure that all gestures are suitable forinstitutionalized older adults and do not overstrain users. The set includes a total of eight simple movements, whichwere derived from physical therapy exercises and everydaymovements that institutionalized older adults are likely ableto perform without much assistance. Postures andmovements were chosen based on their accessibility forpersons with limited physical abilities. We assume thatintegrating gestures that are intuitive and can easily beexplained (e.g., clapping one’s hands) offers theopportunity of easing older adults without priorcomputer/gaming experience into the interaction process.
