Das Sonett umfasst nach barockem Vorbild zwei Quartette und zwei Terzette. Die
Verse sind durchgängig in fünf-hebigen Jamben mit weiblicher Kadenz verfasst. Die
Quartette reimen sich umarmend, während sich die Terzette Strophenübergreifend
kreuzweise reimen (ab V.9: a-b-c; a-b-c).

Im Gegensatz zu früheren Schaffensphasen glaubte Goethe kurz vor und nach 1800
nicht mehr, dass Natur und Kultur Gegensätze sind, die sich unüberbrückbar
gegenüberstehen, sondern dass sie einander ergänzen. Die Kultur baut auf der
