Definition of Leadership and Clinical Leadership
Leadership is a complex concept and can difficult to define because single,
concise descriptions often do not reflect the multifaceted dimensions that leadership
encompasses (Burns, 1979). In addition, definitions of leadership have changed over
time and can mean different things to different people (Northouse, 2010). Northouse
(2010) defines leadership as “a process whereby an individual influences a group of
individuals to achieve a common goal” (p. 3).
A person may influence others in the official capacity from a leadership
position. However, anyone can exert influence regardless of position and thus leaders
can be found in all levels within an organization. The PEW Health Commission
states that leadership is a necessary skill for all health care workers, not just people in
