However, Frochot (2005) argued that these
types of definitions cannot distinguish rural areas
from some urban areas. Because of the complexity
of the definition, Frochot (2005) suggested
that ‘‘tourism in rural areas’’ should be a better
description than ‘‘rural tourism’’ to avoid semantic
confusion. Although rural tourism refers to
specific forms of tourism activities in rural areas
(Sharpley, 1996), it cannot be simply characterized
as farm tourism.
