Phân tích các khái niệm cho thấy, tuy có sự khác biệt nhưng các khái niệm này đều đề cập tới 2 thuộc tính cơ bản của rủi ro: Một là, rủi ro mang tính tất yếu, luôn tồn tại và gắn liền với hoạt động sản xuất kinh doanh của các DN. Sự biến động của các yếu tố vĩ mô cũng như sự thay đổi trong các quyết định quản trị có thể dẫn tới các rủi ro không lường trước của DN. Hai là, rủi ro có thể đo lường được. Mặc dù không dễ dàng đo lường rủi ro, đặc biệt là những rủi ro như chiến tranh, núi lửa… tuy nhiên, khía cạnh có thể đo lường được của rủi ro có tính ứng dụng rất cao; vì trên thực tế, DN không thể đưa ra được quyết định đối phó với rủi ro nếu như không thể xác định được tổn thất xảy ra.
Trên cơ sở phân tích những khái niệm về rủi ro ở trên, tác giả đề xuất một khái niệm về rủi ro như sau: Rủi ro là một tình huống trong đó tồn tại khả năng xảy ra một sai lệch bất lợi so với mục tiêu được mong đợi hay dự tính.
