Findings suggest that there are limitations to the focus on ‘self’
within a humanistic tradition, because amongst students who were
less experienced reflectors than teachers, this detracted from consideration
of the broader issues that inevitably affect practice. It echoes critiques
of humanistic nursing (e.g. Latimer, 2000) and must influence
the emancipatory possibilities of reflection. So, although nurses should
not lose sight of the interpersonal aspects of their work, they should
consider the political, cultural and social influences on their practice.
