Theo con số thống kê của Bộ công thương, kim ngạch xuất khẩu TCMN của Việt Nam tăng liên tục và khá nhanh. Trong vòng 10 năm kim ngạch xuất khẩu TCMN tăng gấp 4,25 lần từ năm 2004 (235 triệu USD) tới năm 2013 (khoảng 1,1 tỷ USD). Trong giai đoạn này, tốc độ tăng trưởng bình quân khá cao là 17,87%/năm. Đáng chú ý nhất là giai năm 2012 với mức tăng 33,3% đưa giá kim ngạch xuất khẩu TCMN lên gần 1 tỷ USD. Năm 2013 giá trị kim ngạch xuất khẩu TCMN đạt trên 1,1 tỷ USD. Trong 4 tháng đầu năm 2014, giá trị kim ngạch của mặt hàng này đạt 583 triệu USD, tuy có giảm 19,3% so với cùng kỳ năm 2013 nhưng lại tăng 23,3% so với kế hoạch đã đề ra. Cơ cấu xuất khẩu của mặt hàng TCMN cũng khá đa dạng với nhiều mẫu mã. Các sản phẩm xuất khẩu chủ yếu vẫn là những sản phẩm truyền thống như gốm sứ, gỗ mỹ nghệ, thêu, mây tre đan… Mặc dù các sản phẩm có nhiều mẫu mã khác nhau nhưng TCMN Việt Nam vẫn chưa đáp ứng được nhu cầu, thị hiếu của các quốc gia trên thế giới. Mẫu mã của mặt hàng thủ công còn chưa có sức sáng tạo, sản phẩm không đồng đều, chưa đạt độ tinh xảo cao.
