The importance of feelings and self-awareness to students' and
teachers' reflection seemed to be related to their construction of
nursing, as ‘being’ rather than simply ‘doing’. This humanistic approach
to nursing requires openness and self-awareness in order to
make informed, responsible choices for practice. Therefore, reflection
valuing these factors would seem important to this way of nursing.
This emphasis extends more widely than the culture within this
study; it is a feature of modern nurse education influenced by
therapeutic ways of nursing, rather than routine and ritualization
(NMC, 2010).
