Ms. Yamada: Lessons learned form the past
Disaster given from background in (Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011)
Disaster nurses are defined as those who apply their skills to respond in a disaster situation. The goal is to achieve the best possible level of health for the people and community involved in the disaster.
Disasters do happen, and in this situation survivors were not provided appropriate assistance due to the government getting caught off guard by the disaster. It’s important to practice preparedness so this does not happen again.
The goal of disaster nursing is to provide the same type of healthcare as during peacetime and a headquarters should be established to take lead in the operation.
During this situation, an Incident command system (ICS) should collect the necessary information to prioritize data and request the necessary supplies to the evacuation centers. This strategy worked well to provide care affectively.
In the future, nurses need to be trained to work in the field so when a disaster happens they are in the right mindset to provide care in the field.
Achievements of the situation include: the establishment of a disaster response HQ in affected prefecture. In the future, leadership should be assigned to coordinate activities before a disaster happens to have better organization from the start of the situation.
Challenges include how to have a rapid and integrated assessment of health needs in time of disaster, which proved to be a challenge during this disaster situation.
Suggestions for the future include a greater respect for different cultural and social values, language and religion of individuals. There should be a holistic approach in collaboration with local authority and community to protect the lives of everyone. Empower the affected people to improve their quality of life.
