Franz von Stuck (1863-1928), 1906 zum Ritter von Stuck geadelt, wurde wie Lehnbach und Kaulbach zu den "Münchner Malerfürsten" gezählt. Zu seinen Schülern an der dortigen Akademie zählten zeitweise Wassily Kandinsky und Paul Klee. Stucks Werke mit seinen oft lasziv-erotischen Motiven galten im biederen Kaiserreich bisweilen als provokant, der Reigen der Sommerfrischlerinnen jedoch ist vergleichsweise zurückhaltend - und reicht als moderne Version eines alten kunsthistorischen Motivs bis weit in die Antike zurück.
