Nancy Peluso's Rich Forests, Poor People, based on her Ph.D. dissertation(Cornell, 1988), is an ambitious book. It combines a fairly detailed overview of the history of forest management in Java, predominantly in thenineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a discussion of the present state ofaffairs, and two case studies of particular forest areas, one in a teak zone(kabupaten Jepara, Pati, and Blora) and one in a non-teak environment(Brebes).
