In moral philosophy consequentialism is the position that the rightness or wrongness of actions depends solely on the overall goodnessor badness of their consequences. As applied to a legal system, the general approach is that the purpose of the criminal law is the prevention or reduction of incidents of harm. While there is some disagreement about the meaning of ‘‘harm,’’ harms (e.g., death) can be identified as such without reference to human actions as their causes (see Feinberg 1984).
