Zhang et al. [57] reported on the merits and drawbacks
of applying a selection of multivariate data analysis techniques
(PCA, cluster analysis, direct classical least squares
(DCLS) and multivariate curve resolution (MCR)) for
analysing Raman images of a model pharmaceutical tablet.
Raman maps were obtained using a microscopic Raman
line-mapping instrument. It was noted that, although
PCA was effective for exploratory data analysis, there
was generally no one-to-one correspondence between PCs
and a chemical components. The potential use of cluster
analysis as a tool for automatic segmentation of images
enabling visualisation of distinct regions with similar chemical
composition in drugs was also described; this method
would be particularly valuable for characterisation of solid
dosage with distinct spatial distribution character, such as
controlled release formulations.
