First, let your child know that if he's a little more reserved and introverted than his peers, that's okay. Shy kids often need a bit more time than others to adjust to new situations. Your job as the parent of a shy child is to support him until he feels comfortable in an unfamiliar setting, like a new elementary school or a class full of unknown kids.Your child will definitely need more support than a more outgoing child during his first few days in a new class, which is simply natural for a child with his temperament. Try to visit the classroom together before his first day so he feels more comfortable with his new surroundings. If your child was shy starting kindergarten and then made friends, remind him of that important success. If the school permits (and many do), ask to have your child assigned to a class with a friend. If he's attending a new school, ask for a copy of the class list as soon as it's available so you can find a couple of classmates who live near you and arrange a few playdates before the school year starts. That way, your grade-schooler will feel at ease with at least some kids among the sea of strangers on his first day.
