Menurut Sarafino (2012) dukungan sosial merupakan suatu bentuk kenyamanan, perhatian, penghargaan ataupun bantuan yang diterima individu dari orang lain maupun suatu kelompok. Bentuk dukungan sosial yaitu: dukungan emosional, dukungan penghargaan dukungan instrumental, dukungan informasi dan dukungan kelompok. Pengertian lain menyebutkan bahwa dukungan sosial adalah kehadiran orang lain yang dapat membuat individu percaya bahwa dirinya dicintai, diperhatikan dan merupakan bagian dari kelompok sosial, yaitu keluarga, rekan kerja dan teman dekat (Sheridan & Radmacher, 1992). Menurut Dimatteo (1991), dukungan sosial merupakan dukungan atau bantuan yang berasal dari orang lain seperti: teman, keluarga, tetangga, rekan kerja dan orang lain. Senada dengan hal tersebut Menurut Sun dkk (2000) sumber dukungan sosial adalah keluarga, teman dan orang-orang spesial.
