We acknowledge that the findings of this study
must be viewed with caution given the cross-
sectional nature of the design, which precludes
strong statements on causality. Longitudinal ana-
lyses would allow us to examine the dynamic na-
ture of work by measuring changes in perceptions
of working conditions over time and the impact of
these conditions on nurse and patient outcomes.
Replication of the study in other samples of staff
nurses is needed to validate the current findings.
