seeds in the country. Abdalla (1969) revealed that onion seed yield
obtained in Sudan was comparable to onion seed obtained elsewhere
in the world. Statistical data about areas or yields of onion
seeds in Sudan are not available. Mohamedali and Nourai (1988)
reported that an average onion seed yield of more than 600 kg
per ha (250 kg/feddan) is normally produced by Northern Region
farmers due to a relatively cool, dry and long winter season.
In Sudan onion seed research started earlier in the mid-sixties
and noticeable early efforts have been done by some scientists
(Nourai, 1984), but many important research areas still need
further investigation and thorough studies. Water deficit is a major
limiting factor of crop production under continental climates and
there is a continuous demand for genetically new drought-resistant
crops and vegetables (Csiszár et al., 2007). Onions are considered a
shallow-rooted crop and have been reported to have little tolerance
for water stress (Shock et al., 1998). Onion is sensitive to water
stress and requires frequent and light irrigation to avoid water
deficiency and to adequately recharge the plant root zone (Koriem
et al., 1994). The best yield of onion occur when soil was constantly
moist and irrigation should cease 2 weeks before harvest to prevent
