เป็นจังหวัดชายแดนจังหวัดหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับสหภาพพม่า ตั้งอยู่ทางด้านตะวันตกสุดของภาคเหนือ โดยอยู่ห่างจากกรุงเทพฯ ประมาณ 924 กิโลเมตร มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 12,681.259 ตารางกิโลเมตร โดยได้ขึ้นชื่อว่าเป็น "เมืองสามหมอก" เนื่องจากเป็นเมืองในหุบเขา ล้อมรอบไปด้วยภูเขาสลับซับซ้อนทอดขนานไปกับทิวเขาถนนธงชัยและทิวเขาแดนลาว จึงถูกปกคลุมด้วยหมอกตลอดทั้งปี มีทิวทัศน์สวยงามตามธรรมชาติของเทือกเขาสลับซับซ้อนและป่าไม้นานาพันธุ์ จนมีคำกล่าวว่าเปรียบเสมือนกับเป็นสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ของเมืองไทย ซึ่งในปัจจุบันได้มีแบ่งการปกครองออกเป็น 7 อำเภอ คือ อำเภอเมือง แม่สะเรียง ขุนยวม ปาย แม่ลาน้อย สบเมย และปางมะผ้า
