La modalité privilégiée en est la durée, qui apparaît comme mode d'existence de la vie intérieure vécue. Changement incessant, elle est à la fois conservatrice et créatrice. Conservatrice, car elle maintient la survivance du passé sous forme de poussée, de tendance. Créatrice, car elle impulse le changement, la croissance, le mûrissement, sous la forme à la fois du nouveau et de l'imprévisible.
